Different tobacco varieties are grown in Turkey, and the type produced depends on the geographical region. Of the tobacco grown in Turkey, 98 percent is sun-cured Oriental tobacco. The remainder is dark air-cured (Cigar), flue-cured (Virginia), and light air-cured (Burley).
Turkish tobacco is divided into four groups according to their geographical region: Aegean, Marmara-Thrace, Black Sea, and East-Southeast Anatolia. They show different characteristics depending on the geography of the region, ecological factors, and the tobacco strains themselves.
