Aegean Region
The Aegean region is the leader in Turkey with the size of tobacco growing area, the quantity of tobacco grown and with its share in exports which reaches 90-95 percent of the total, holding 55 percent of all tobacco production. The tobacco grown in this region is known in the international market as the Izmir tobacco.
In general, this tobacco has small leaves, no stems, a midrib, a light yellowish-red color, thin veins, wary appearance, strong texture, low nicotine content, sweet taste, is slow burning and aromatic. American and European cigarette producers prefer using this tobacco to reduce the strength of strong blends, sweeten the taste of unsavory blends and provide aroma to neutral blends.
Black Sea Region
Since its climate and soil have different characteristics, the Black Sea region grows tobacco of various origins. While the Black Sea Region was the 2nd largest tobacco growing area in Turkey both in size of growing area and the amount grown with small-sized tobacco growing in Samsun, small and medium-sized growing in Gümüşhacıköy, Tokat, and large-sized growing in Trabzon and Artvin, now it has dropped to 3rd place as the result of vast increase in the Eastern Region tobacco.
Among Turkish tobaccos, the highest quality and the most world renowned types, namely the Maden, Canik, Evkaf and Basma tobaccos are grown in this region.
Marmara Region
In the Marmara Region, due to its ecological and soil characteristics polyculture farming system is employed. Consequently, less tobacco is produced in this region compared to the other regions.
Tobacco from Bursa, Düzce, İzmit, Hendek, Edirne, Yenice and Agonya accounts for 2 percent of the overall production and 1 percent of the overall exports from Turkey.
East and Southeast Anatolian Region

This tobacco's taste and aroma is similar to the Virginia type. The region also produces the Nicotiana Rustica type tobacco named Tömbeki and Hasankeyf.Tobacco from the East and Southeast Anatolian regions is generally medium to large size, has a rich texture except the tobacco that is irrigated which has a weak texture, a yellow and light red color.
